Our story so far...

Cineworld Cinemas was founded in 1995 and is now one of the leading cinema groups worldwide. Originally a private company, it registered as a public company in May 2006 and listed on the London Stock Exchange in May 2007, subsequently delisting in August 2023.

Cineworld Cinemas has now returned to private ownership with a transformed balance sheet and a right-sized capital structure, ready and fully able to succeed in the dynamic and constantly changing cinema industry.

Currently, Cineworld Cinemas is the world's second-largest cinema chain, with over 9,000 screens across 751 sites in 10 countries. The primary cinema brands are Cineworld and Picturehouse in the United Kingdom and Ireland, Cinema City in Eastern and Central Europe, Yes Planet in Israel, and Regal Cinemas in the United States.

Our history and key events...

Cineworld Group plc was founded

Cineworld was founded in 1995, and the first Cineworld Cinema opened in Stevenage, Hertfordshire in July 1996.

The Group acquired UK operations of UGC

In 2004, Cineworld acquired the UK and Ireland operations of French cinema company UGC.

The Group listed on the London Stock Exchange

​Originally a private company, Cineworld re-registered as a public company in May 2006 and listed on the London Stock Exchange in May 2007.

The Group acquired Picturehouse chain of cinemas

​In December 2012, Cineworld acquired the Picturehouse Cinema chain, adding 21 cinemas to its portfolio.

Completion of combination with Cinema City International N.V.

​On 27 February 2014, Cineworld completed the takeover of Cinema City International N.V. In May 2014, Mooky Greidinger joined the board of directors as CEO, having previously been CEO of Cinema City International.

The Group acquired six cinemas from Empire Cinemas

​In August 2016, Cineworld acquired six cinemas from Empire Cinemas, which included a cinema located in London's West End. Cineworld subsequently acquired one further cinema from Empire Cinemas in 2017.

Completion of acquisition of Regal Entertainment Group

​On 5 December 2017, it was announced that Cineworld would buy Regal Entertainment Group, creating the world's second largest cinema group. The acquisition was completed in 2018.

Cineworld successfully emerged from Chapter 11

On 1 August 2023, ​Cineworld completed its financial restructuring process and emerged from its Chapter 11 cases, well positioned to pursue future strategic initiatives and continue providing leading cinematic experiences for customers globally. Eduardo Acuna joined the board of directors as CEO, having previously served as President for the Americas region of Cinépolis.
