Job Summary and Mission

This job contributes to Starbucks success by leading a team of store partners to create and maintain the Starbucks Experience for our customers and partners.

The Store Manager is required to regularly exercise initiative in managing the overall operation of the store. In particular, a majority of time is spent managing and coaching the store partners, making people decisions (e.g. development, recruitment, deploying), ensuring customer satisfaction and product quality, managing the store’s financial performance, and managing health and safety and

security within the store. 

The partner is responsible for acting in accordance with and as an ambassador of Starbucks guiding principles, culture and values; embracing the coffee culture and keeping it at the heart of everything we do.

 

Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:

 

Leadership – Setting goals for the work group, developing organisational capability, and modelling how we work together:

  • Displays a “customer comes first” attitude by role-modelling legendary service, and training and supporting partners to enable them to be accountable for delivering legendary customer service
  • Plans, identifies, communicates, and delegates appropriate responsibilities and practices to store partners to ensure smooth flow of operations and allow consistent delivery of the Starbucks Experience
  • Manages with integrity, honesty, and knowledge that promote the culture, values, and mission of Starbucks. Demonstrates a calm exterior presence during periods of high volume or unusual events and manages smooth transitions thereafter to maintain operational excellence and to set an example for the store team
  • Drives the implementation of company programs by developing action plans and directly motivating and instructing the store team to implement them to meet operational and organisational objectives
  • Provides coaching and direction to the store team to take action and to achieve operational goals. Constantly reviews store environment and key business indicators to identify problems, concerns, and opportunities for improvement to provide coaching and direction to the store team to achieve operational goals

 

Planning and Execution - Developing strategic and operational plans for the store team, managing execution, and measuring results:

  • Utilises existing tools to identify and prioritise communications and regularly uses discretion to filter communications to the store team.
  • Communicates clearly, concisely, and accurately in order to ensure effective store operations
  • Constantly manages store-staffing levels to ensure partner development and talent acquisition to maintain store operational requirements
  • Cascades rollouts to team to support execution of regional and company initiatives to achieve both operational excellence and business results

 

Business Requirements – Providing functional expertise and executing functional responsibilities:

  • Regularly utilises management information tools and analyses financial reports to identify and address trends and issues in store performance
  • Uses all operational tools to plan for and achieve operational excellence in the store
  • Ensures and is accountable for adherence to applicable employment laws for all store partners.
  • Monitors all cash handling and cash register functions to ensure accuracy and consistency
  • Regularly uses discretion in accessing internal contacts to support store operations and to execute district and regional initiatives
  • Solicits customer feedback to understand customer needs and the needs of the community in which the store lives
  • Contributes towards store profitability by seeking opportunities to increase sales and control costs

 

Partner Development/Team Building - Providing partners with coaching, feedback, and development opportunities and building effective teams:

  • Challenges and inspires partners to achieve business results, encourages participation from partners in developing store goals and plans 
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with store team by understanding and addressing individual motivation, needs, and concerns
  • Actively manages store partners by regularly providing feedback and setting challenging goals to improve partner performance. Manages ongoing partner performance using performance management tools to support organisational objectives
  • Recognises and reinforces individual and team accomplishments by using existing organisational tools and programs as well as by finding new, creative, and impactful methods of recognition
  • Utilises and demonstrates effective management principles and practices to create and maintain a successful store team resulting in an environment where all partners are valued and respected

 

Job Dimensions

Typically manages up to 10 partners (this includes those working part time hours).

Decision Making Parameters

Overall accountability for the day to day running of the business (i.e. a store).

Works closely with the Licensed Store District Manager when agreeing

sales/profitability targets.

Consults the Licensed Store District Manager on all non-routine decisions e.g.

increase in labour hours; a specific

marketing campaign; promotions to retail manager training programmes;

reinvestment in the business i.e. refurbishment.

 

Experience

At least two year’s experience in a retail /restaurant environment in a management role involving the management of people.
